Classification of Brain Tumors using Hybrid Deep Learning Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has greatly improved the interpretation of medical images. However, conventional CNNs typically demand extensive computational resources and large training datasets. To address these limitations, this study applied transfer learning to achieve strong classification performance using fewer training samples. Specifically, the study compared EfficientNetV2 with its predecessor, EfficientNet, and with ResNet50 in classifying brain tumors into three types: glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumors. Results showed that EfficientNetV2 delivered superior performance compared to the other models. However, this improvement came at the cost of increased training time, likely due to the model's greater complexity.

Avocado Price Prediction Using a Hybrid Deep Learning Model: TCN-MLP-Attention Architecture

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

With the growing demand for healthy foods, agricultural product price forecasting has become increasingly important. Hass avocados, as a high-value crop, exhibit complex price fluctuations influenced by factors such as seasonality, region, and weather. Traditional prediction models often struggle with highly nonlinear and dynamic data. To address this, we propose a hybrid deep learning model, TCN-MLP-Attention Architecture, combining Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN) for sequential feature extraction, Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP) for nonlinear interactions, and an Attention mechanism for dynamic feature weighting. The dataset used covers over 50,000 records of Hass avocado sales across the U.S. from 2015 to 2018, including variables such as sales volume, average price, time, region, weather, and variety type, collected from point-of-sale systems and the Hass Avocado Board. After systematic preprocessing, including missing value imputation and feature normalization, the proposed model was trained and evaluated. Experimental results demonstrate that the TCN-MLP-Attention model achieves excellent predictive performance, with an RMSE of 1.23 and an MSE of 1.51, outperforming traditional methods. This research provides a scalable and effective approach for time series forecasting in agricultural markets and offers valuable insights for intelligent supply chain management and price strategy optimization.

Optimized detection of cyber-attacks on IoT networks via hybrid deep learning models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has increased the risk of cyber-attacks, making effective detection essential for securing IoT networks. This work introduces a novel approach combining Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), Deep Belief Networks (DBNs), and Autoencoders to detect known and previously unseen attack patterns. A comprehensive evaluation using simulated and real-world traffic data is conducted, with models optimized via Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The system achieves an accuracy of up to 99.99% and Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) values exceeding 99.50%. Experiments on NSL-KDD, UNSW-NB15, and CICIoT2023 confirm the model's strong performance across diverse attack types. These findings suggest that the proposed method enhances IoT security by identifying emerging threats and adapting to evolving attack strategies.

Predicting the Stay Length of Patients in Hospitals using Convolutional Gated Recurrent Deep Learning Model

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Predicting hospital length of stay (LoS) stands as a critical factor in shaping public health strategies. This data serves as a cornerstone for governments to discern trends, patterns, and avenues for enhancing healthcare delivery. In this study, we introduce a robust hybrid deep learning model, a combination of Multi-layer Convolutional (CNNs) deep learning, Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), and Dense neural networks, that outperforms 11 conventional and state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methodologies in accurately forecasting inpatient hospital stay duration. Our investigation delves into the implementation of this hybrid model, scrutinising variables like geographic indicators tied to caregiving institutions, demographic markers encompassing patient ethnicity, race, and age, as well as medical attributes such as the CCS diagnosis code, APR DRG code, illness severity metrics, and hospital stay duration. Statistical evaluations reveal the pinnacle LoS accuracy achieved by our proposed model (CNN-GRU-DNN), which averages at 89% across a 10-fold cross-validation test, surpassing LSTM, BiLSTM, GRU, and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) by 19%, 18.2%, 18.6%, and 7%, respectively. Accurate LoS predictions not only empower hospitals to optimise resource allocation and curb expenses associated with prolonged stays but also pave the way for novel strategies in hospital stay management. This avenue holds promise for catalysing advancements in healthcare research and innovation, inspiring a new era of precision-driven healthcare practices.

A Hybrid Deep Learning Classification of Perimetric Glaucoma Using Peripapillary Nerve Fiber Layer Reflectance and Other OCT Parameters from Three Anatomy Regions

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Precis: A hybrid deep-learning model combines NFL reflectance and other OCT parameters to improve glaucoma diagnosis. Objective: To investigate if a deep learning model could be used to combine nerve fiber layer (NFL) reflectance and other OCT parameters for glaucoma diagnosis. Patients and Methods: This is a prospective observational study where of 106 normal subjects and 164 perimetric glaucoma (PG) patients. Peripapillary NFL reflectance map, NFL thickness map, optic head analysis of disc, and macular ganglion cell complex thickness were obtained using spectral domain OCT. A hybrid deep learning model combined a fully connected network (FCN) and a convolution neural network (CNN) to develop and combine those OCT maps and parameters to distinguish normal and PG eyes. Two deep learning models were compared based on whether the NFL reflectance map was used as part of the input or not. Results: The hybrid deep learning model with reflectance achieved 0.909 sensitivity at 99% specificity and 0.926 at 95%. The overall accuracy was 0.948 with 0.893 sensitivity and 1.000 specificity, and the AROC was 0.979, which is significantly better than the logistic regression models (p < 0.001). The second best model is the hybrid deep learning model w/o reflectance, which also had significantly higher AROC than logistic regression models (p < 0.001). Logistic regression with reflectance model had slightly higher AROC or sensitivity than the other logistic regression model without reflectance (p = 0.024). Conclusions: Hybrid deep learning model significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy, without or without NFL reflectance. Hybrid deep learning model, combining reflectance/NFL thickness/GCC thickness/ONH parameter, may be a practical model for glaucoma screen purposes.

Exploring a Hybrid Deep Learning Framework to Automatically Discover Topic and Sentiment in COVID-19 Tweets

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

COVID-19 has created a major public health problem worldwide and other problems such as economic crisis, unemployment, mental distress, etc. The pandemic is deadly in the world and involves many people not only with infection but also with problems, stress, wonder, fear, resentment, and hatred. Twitter is a highly influential social media platform and a significant source of health-related information, news, opinion and public sentiment where information is shared by both citizens and government sources. Therefore an effective analysis of COVID-19 tweets is essential for policymakers to make wise decisions. However, it is challenging to identify interesting and useful content from major streams of text to understand people's feelings about the important topics of the COVID-19 tweets. In this paper, we propose a new \textit{framework} for analyzing topic-based sentiments by extracting key topics with significant labels and classifying positive, negative, or neutral tweets on each topic to quickly find common topics of public opinion and COVID-19-related attitudes. While building our model, we take into account hybridization of BiLSTM and GRU structures for sentiment analysis to achieve our goal. The experimental results show that our topic identification method extracts better topic labels and the sentiment analysis approach using our proposed hybrid deep learning model achieves the highest accuracy compared to traditional models.

Forecasting Pressure Of Ventilator Using A Hybrid Deep Learning Model Built With Bi-LSTM and Bi-GRU To Simulate Ventilation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

A ventilator simulation system can make mechanical ventilation easier and more effective. As a result, predicting a patient's ventilator pressure is essential when designing a simulation ventilator. We suggested a hybrid deep learning-based approach to forecast required ventilator pressure for patients. This system is made up of Bi-LSTM and Bi-GRU networks. The SELU activation function was used in our proposed model. MAE and MSE were used to examine the accuracy of the proposed model so that our proposed methodology can be applied to real-world problems. The model performed well against test data and created far too few losses. Major parts of our research were data collection, data analysis, data cleaning, building hybrid Bi-LSTM and Bi-GRU model, training the model, model evaluation, and result analysis. We compared the results of our research with some contemporary works, and our proposed model performed better than those models.
